Crocus sativus L, or saffron, is used traditionally for medicinal purposes as well as cooking in Chinese, Ayurvedic, and Persian systems of medicine and the numerous bioactive compounds such as apocarotenoids, monoterpenoids, flavonoids, phenolic acids, and phytosterols are currently being investigated for a wide range of therapeutic effects, especially on the nervous system and for brain health.
